Free Agency Watch: Saturday stories

By Cheap Tickets at 6 March, 2010, 11:54 am

Here are a few things to watch as free agency heads on into Saturday… The Seahawks are hosting Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall , who has a first-round tender. Unless Seattle can re-negotiate the terms, they’d have to give up their sixth overall pick for Marshall and sign the receiver to a lucrative contract. Pretty rich, no matter how good Marshall is. The evolving story of Donovan McNabb and the Eagles . Are the rumored Browns overtures true? Could Michael Vick (notes) go elsewhere instead? We’re going to find out a couple things from this story — who has the personnel pull in that franchise, and how much faith they have in Kevin Kolb (notes) . Former Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman (notes) is currently in Jacksonville , with interest from the Bucs, Eagles and Seahawks in his back pocket. As much as Julius Peppers (notes) got the big bucks, Kampman has been the more consistent quarterback disruptor over the last few seasons when you factor in hits and hurries. It’s official: The Bengals are interested in acquiring T.O . I so want this to happen. Ocho, T.O., and Matt Jones (notes) ? Are you kidding me? How great would that “Hard Knocks” series be? Jason LaCanfora reports that the Chiefs might be interested in Thomas Jones (notes) , if the Jets don’t bring him back for less money. In a stacked draft class at the position, what will happen to the new class of free agents? Patrick Willis (notes) will not be very happy if his 49ers sign David Carr (notes) . And, of course, the Redskins and Cowboys have made no major splashes in free agency. Will the Yankees and Red Sox of the NFL make it through this capless year without throwing major dollars at their personnel issues?

Spring Snapshot: Tigers aiming for first playoff run since ‘06

By Cheap Tickets at 6 March, 2010, 11:47 am

Every day in spring training until we’re finished with the entire league, Big League Stew takes a brief capsule look at each team we visit in Florida and Arizona. Next up are the Detroit Tigers , who are paying a lot of money for a team that hasn’t appeared in October since that magical 2006 season. DETROIT TIGERS ‘09 RECORD: 86-77, 2nd in AL Central BIG ACQUISITIONS: Johnny Damon (notes) is playing left field in Motown after getting the cold shoulder from Brian Cashman … Jose Valverde (notes) signed a two-year deal to be the team’s new closer … The Tigers acquired outfielder Austin Jackson (notes) and pitchers Max Scherzer (notes) and Phil Coke (notes) through the three-way trade that made big waves at the winter meetings. BIG DEPARTURES: The Tigers gave their fans at least one reason to like the Yankees when they traded Curtis Granderson (notes) to the Bronx … The team didn’t want to pay the price that closer Fernando Rodney (notes) was asking, so he took his act to Anaheim … Brandon Lyon (notes) chased middle reliever riches to Houston, while infielder Placido Polanco (notes) returned to Philadelphia. FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT THE TIGERS:

Johnny Damon returning to Captain Caveman bearded look?

By Cheap Tickets at 6 March, 2010, 9:56 am

LAKELAND, Fla. — I arrived at Tigertown a little too late to make the clubhouse rounds, but MLive luckily had my back when it came to one of my burning questions. Might Johnny Damon (notes) return to the beard that made him a household name in Boston, now that he’s out from under the Yankees’ clean-cut requirements?

“Not Guilty” Pleas for Three Men Accused of Ticketmaster Hacking

By Cheap Tickets at 3 March, 2010, 1:42 pm

Three men accused of running a ticket-scalping enterprise that grossed nearly $29 million have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and computer hacking, NorthJersey, com reports . According to the 43-count indictment, the three men allegedly created a computer software that allowed them send mass ticket requests to ticketing websites like Ticketmaster and MLB.com by bypassing the sites’ Captchas — those squiggly words you enter before purchasing tickets — allowing the men to rake in large amounts of tickets to in-demand events and then sell them for a big profit. According to the indictment, the three California men — Kenneth Lowson, Kristofer Kirsch and Joel Stevenson — scooped up the best tickets for artists like Bruce Springsteen and Miley Cyrus and other events like New York Yankees playoff games and then sold them through their company Wiseguy Tickets Inc. More than 1.5 tickets were purchased using the software, which was developed by programmers in Bulgaria to bypass ticketing sites’ safeguard measures, for a profit of nearly $29 million from 2002 to 2008. In pleading not guilty, the defendants’ legal team claimed that their clients in fact did not break any laws, and attorney Mark Rush told the judge, “Congress has not yet legislated that ticket brokering is illegal.” Rush also argued that selling tickets for higher than face value is legal in 47 states. Two of the three men were released on bail, with a May 3rd trial date set. A fourth man involved in the indictment is expected to surrender to authorities soon. With the future of the ticketing industry in flux following the merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation and the possibility that the secondary ticket market will play an even larger role moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see if this case may spur some change regarding states’ stances on scalping in the future.

Recession? What recession? Baseball claims record revenues

By Cheap Tickets at 26 February, 2010, 4:57 pm

They say that funeral homes are the only industries that are truly recession proof . Baseball, however, is making a good case of why Bud Selig has more in common with your local undertaker (other than, you know, just looking like him).
