Davey Becks supports the green and gold protest

After saying all the right things, getting a fantastic reception , and then making Manchester United fans even happier by losing to his former club, Davey Becks further cemented his hero status in the red sections of Manchester by wrapping his tattooed neck in a green and gold scarf, which United fans are using as a symbolic protest against the club's awful owners. So does that mean Davey supports the anti-Glazer movement? After the match, he said: "It's not for me to comment about the ownership of the club or how it is run, that is for other people. "I saw the scarf and I picked it up because it is the original colours of the club as Newton Heath. "I hope United now go all the way. They deserve to. It's a great fanbase at a great club with a great manager." But not great owners? Of course he just happened to see the scarf on the ground, said "look at the pretty colors" and then put it on because of its historical place, having nothing to do with the much more relevant protest going on. Suuure. Meanwhile, if he just came right out and said "the Glazers smell like feet and they're awful" he probably would've been named the god king of Manchester by now. Photo: AP

Video: Andrew Raycroft’s blind robbery of Lee Stempniak

Andrew Raycroft (notes) has been a serviceable backup to Roberto Luongo (notes) for the Vancouver Canucks this season. Appearing in 17 games and starting 11 of them , the 2004 Calder Trophy winner has posted a 7-4-1 record having been mostly used on the road. Only three times this season has Raycroft played in front of the fans at Canada Hockey Place GM Place. That's why it's fitting that he's closed out Vancouver's monster 14-game road trip Wednesday night in Phoenix during a 4-3 shootout loss to the Coyotes. The Canucks finish their trip with an 8-5-1 record but with the Colorado Avalanche still lurking in the Northwest Division standings. As for Raycroft, just minutes into the Canucks' final road game before returning home on Saturday night, he went all Dominik Hasek (notes) on Coyotes forward Lee Stempniak (notes) for a "Save of the Year" contender: The entire lower bowl was on their feet thinking Stempniak had scored. Oh, you precious Coyotes fans. Poor Raycroft had you thinking it was 1-0 until he turned into Spider-Man for a second. Stempniak would later get his revenge on Raycroft, scoring twice and adding a goal during the six-round shootout. With the victory, Phoenix inches closer towards the playoffs and having head coach Dave Tippett's earn this season's Jack Adams Award.

Harangody quiets talk that Notre Dame’s better without him

As Notre Dame reeled off season-saving win after season-saving win without injured star Luke Harangody to close the regular season, a once-unthinkable question surfaced in the minds of fans of the Fighting Irish . Could Notre Dame actually be better without Harangody? We now know the answer to that question is an emphatic "no" after watching Harangody lead the Irish to their biggest win of the season on Wednesday night. In just his second game back from a bone bruise in his right knee. Harangody came off the bench to score 20 points and grab 10 boards in 24 minutes, propelling Notre Dame to a 68-56 victory over Seton Hall that removed any remaining doubt that the Irish are at-large-worthy.

Location, location, location: Lee likes where he’s at with Mariners

SURPRISE! Ariz. — Cliff Lee (notes) says he already likes it in Seattle and the Mariners season doesn't even start for another 3 1/2 weeks. That's how comfortable Lee appeared Wednesday, both during and after his Catcus League debut. Five days after having an awkward performance in an intrasquad game, Lee pitched free and easy over three innings against the Texas Rangers , allowing a run and five hits with a walk in Seattle's 6-3 victory . Lee threw with midseason precision — 46 pitches, 36 for strikes — and any thought of any discomfort he might have after offseason foot surgery was set aside. Lee did so well spotting his fastball he was able to work on his other pitches, a workout that was not on his original schedule. What's more, Lee seemed happy with his location, as it refers to home plate and home. "It didn't take me long to realize that it's good people here and a good organization," Lee said. "I like where I'm at. It's not a bad thing. It's not a bad thing at all." When the Phillies traded Lee in December, he didn't see it coming , not at all. But Lee's shock has turned to aww . "It's a bunch of good guys here," Lee said. "It's not hard to fit in with this group. It's a lot of good people, from the coaches to the players to the trainers, everything. "The management, they've done it right. And it didn't take long to see that. It's a good environment." Is he so comfortable that contract extension talks are underway between his agent and the club? For the moment, they aren't. But could they be? "I don't really want to have to deal with it during the season," Lee said. "That's how I view it." OK, but is Lee open to signing with the Mariners? "If I sign here, great. If that doesn't work out, that's good too," Lee said. "It's a win-win." Near-love can be so confusing. Lee probably hedged a little because he wants to enjoy the freedom, and leverage, of free agency. After having been dealt twice since this past August, Lee wants to experience what insiders call the "no-trade clause." "I think every player wants that," Lee said. "Why would I not want that? I want everything that's going to help me out. ... That's part of negotiation."

Padraig Harrington, history teacher, explains difference in Britain and Ireland

You probably know this, fine reader you, but Britain and Ireland aren't the same country. A reporter at the CA Championship this week didn't totally grasp that, and asked Padraig Harrington , a three-time major champion from Dublin, this question. "If you should win here, would that be a triumph for Ireland or for the British people?" Well, this is obvious. It would be a triumph for Ireland, since, you know, Padraig is from Ireland. The usually passive Harrington didn't take too kindly to the ignorance, and responded with this: "You know, obviously if you're -- by asking that question, you haven't shown very much insight into anything, so I'll let you go do the homework on it. That would be like if a Canadian won here, would it be a triumph for the Americans or the Canadians? If a South American won here, would it be a triumph -- it would be the same thing. I'm not from Britain. I'm Irish. I think you want to talk that to maybe one of the guys from Northern Ireland. I'm from the other side of the Republic: Green, white and orange." Pwned, Mr. Harrington. Not really much you can say after that. I'm pretty sure the next geography question will not be asked by this reporter.

AC Milan’s VP knew they’d lose

While most members of AC Milan held out hope that they could go to Old Trafford and overcome the hole they fell into during the first leg of their Champions League tie with Manchester United, the club's vice president, Adriano Galliani, knew a day in advance that they had no hope. Said the Kojak-looking Debbie Downer after his side got eliminated: “I knew it was going to go badly yesterday afternoon. We had taken Alexandre Pato, Alessandro Nesta and Luca Antonini in the squad, but all three of them pulled out with injuries on Tuesday. “Without such important players and taking on a Manchester United side of such quality, it was always going to be extremely difficult. “I don't think it will affect our Serie A form. Leonardo already did very well in the locker room to reassure the players.” Yeah, and I'm sure hearing you tell the press how hopeless they are after suffering a few injuries that confidence Leonardo propped up will be flying high.

Puck Previews: Sid’s stick located; radio prank awkwardness

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished. • The timing of stories today got us all turned around, so Puck Headlines will return on Thursday. Expect the Crosby Golden Roar vote to begin on Friday, through the weekend. Any entries you think have to make the cut, make the case in the comments here. Preview: New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils , 7 p.m. EST. For both teams, the stakes are rather obvious: They either build momentum with a huge win over a hated rival, or they get pushed into a deeper depression with a loss. The Devils are in a 6-12-2 funk that's seen them tumble out of the division lead. The Rangers are in a three-game winless streak as they try and climb back into the eighth seed. Blueshirt Banter has a good across-the-Hudson preview. Preview: Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks , 8:30 p.m. EST. Game of the night, as the Blackhawks look to bounce back from an awful loss to Detroit and the Kings look to ride high after a 6-0 dismantling of the Blue Jackets. Antti Niemi (notes) gets the nod for Chicago, but the big news for the 'Hawks is the return of Adam Burish to the lineup to cause havoc and make women swoon.
