By Cheap Tickets at 6 February, 2010, 11:42 pm
1. You’ll want to plan ahead for your pizza delivery . Super Bowl Sunday is the busiest day of the year for pizza joints, and every place quoted here says you should call at least one hour , and possibly two hours, in advance if you want your pizza delivered at halftime. Also, tip your drivers well. They’re working hard, they don’t get to watch the game, and a lot of them are out there on unsafe roads. 2. It’s perfectly safe for you to flush your toilet . Some wise guy at your Super Bowl party may tell you that the rush of people flushing their toilets at halftime can cause a sanitation disaster , but it’s absolutely not true. It’s an urban legend that’s existed for a while now, but pay it no mind. You can flush with a clear conscience. 3. The Who is actually doing this for free . Somehow, the highly-commercialized worlds of rock ‘n roll and the Super Bowl are coming together, and someone has ended up doing something for free. The NFL covers all expenses for The Who, but they will receive no actual fee for playing . They don’t even have a new album to promote, either. Strange. 4. That rocking 12-minute medley The Who belts out? You can play it yourself . Immediately after the game, you’ll be able to download the medley The Who plays on your Rock Band video game . It’ll cost about $2 for owners of the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. Playstation 3 owners will have to wait a bit longer, though. 5. It takes a village to assemble a stage . The people charged with setting up and tearing down The Who’s stage have only six minutes for each task — that’s probably why they need 600 people to pull it off . The stage weighs 10 tons and is broken down into 25 parts. 6. The Lingerie Bowl is giving it another go . The Lingerie Bowl, a tackle football game involving women in lingerie and shoulder pads, is back for another try in 2010. This year, it’s available via pay-per-view, and you’ll have to break out your computer and head to lflus.com to access it . $9.99 seems like a high price to pay to get a group of men standing around a computer looking at pixelated women. 7. There are more wholesome halftime activities available, though . The Puppy Bowl also returns for a sixth go-round on Animal Planet . If you’ve never seen it, I could tell you that it features a group of puppies running around in a football-themed pen, but that doesn’t come anywhere near capturing the insane levels of cuteness that will be achieved. If you don’t smile when watching the Puppy Bowl, you may need medical attention. Or your team might be down 30 at halftime. 8. Some recent halftime acts are very close to qualifying for the senior citizen discount at Denny’s . Since the infamous Janet Jackson controversy, Super Bowl halftime shows have been played exclusively by (to be generous) middle-aged men. The youngest has been Prince who played Super Bowl XLI at the age of 49. Some recent performers, like Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Pete Townshend, have been well into their 60s. 9. Super Bowl XLIV’s act borrowed a bit from Super Bowl XL’s act . Pete Townshend developed his slashing “windmill” style after seeing Keith Richards swing his arm as he was playing on stage in 1963. Townshend later asked Richards about the gesture, and Richards had no recollection of ever doing it. 10. We didn’t used to take the celebrity route . The first three Super Bowl halftime shows went a very traditional, very amateur route: They booked college marching bands. At Super Bowl I, high schoolers even got in on the act, with the Anaheim High School drill team performing. The first celebrity involvement came at Super Bowl IV when Carol Channing got involved. 11. Care to speculate about next year’s halftime show? It seems like The Eagles are an early favorite to play next year’s halftime gig , and that would certainly fit in with recent trends. I have a hunch, though, that next year is the year that the NFL throws caution to the wind and dares to go a little bit younger and/or hipper. Other popular Yahoo! By Cheap Tickets at 6 February, 2010, 11:35 pm
Paulo Thiago keeps dogging American Kickboxing Academy fighters. He screwed up Josh Koscheck’s 2009 welterweight title hopes with an upset at UFC 95, and now he’s done it to Koscheck’s AKA teammate Mike Swick. Thiago’s standing defense looked terrible in his UFC debut against Koscheck, but he still knocked him out with a huge uppercut. His defense was a 100 percent better Saturday, and it seemed to throw Swick’s rythym off. Swick, who is always a relentless guy on the feet, finally landed a good straight right early in the second roun and he tried to unload on Thiago. However, the Brazilian backed up and countered with a huge left. Swick went down and before he was able to scramble, Thiago locked on a d’arce choke. It took just seconds to put Swick to sleep. Referee Herb Dean stepped in at 1:54 of the second round, giving Thiago the win. Swick (14-4, 9-3 UFC) was a minus-200 favorite. Thiago (13-1, 3-1 UFC) is now 2-1 against AKA’s trio of welterweights. Thiago earned the knockout of the night bonus against Koscheck, and he looks like a lock for submission of the night again.

By Cheap Tickets at 6 February, 2010, 11:11 pm
There’s a school of thought that Rick Barnes has the best job in college basketball because Texas is a big-time program that’s easy to recruit to, yet football comes first so fans aren’t quick to criticize if the hoops program falls shy of expectations. Can we all agree that the next few days should be a great litmus test for that theory? An 80-71 loss at rival Oklahoma on Saturday marked Texas’ fourth loss in six games since a 17-0 start catapulted the Longhorns to the top spot in the polls for the first time in program history. It certainly won’t get any easier either for Texas, with top-ranked Kansas looming on Monday. What’s most shocking about the Longhorns’ recent struggles is how suddenly they’ve seemingly fallen off the cliff. A month ago we were hailing Texas (19-4, 5-3) as a Final Four favorite after convincing wins over Pittsburgh, North Carolina and Michigan State, and now we’re wondering if the Longhorns are even one of the four best teams in their own league. It’s easy to diagnose the problems that have haunted Texas the past few weeks: Thinning center Dexter Pittman’s production has been shrinking faster than his waistline, from 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds in the non-conference season to half those numbers in conference play. Touted freshman Avery Bradley showed flashes of being in the same class as John Wall in the early season, but he’d been unspectacular in recent weeks before scoring 21 against the Sooners Texas shoots a woeful 62.1 percent from the foul line as a team, a problem that has been exposed as the Longhorns have played more close games in conference play.

Demian Maia has deadly submissions, and Dan Miller knew that coming into their fight at UFC 109. Appropriately, Miller tried to keep the fight standing all along, but he didn’t do enough to win. Maia took the 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision.

Matt Serra is definitely New York through and through. His video blogs this week were filled with hilarious back and forth banter with his trainer Ray Longo. He even joked that they may be bound for Season 2 of “Jersey Shore.” That’s perfect. A jiu-jitsu ace, Serra definitely knows how to use his fists. Frank Trigg chose to duke it out with the diminutiive Serra and paid the price just over two minutes into the fight. Trigg threw a sloppy left hand, left it out there for way too long and got crushed by a Serra right-hand counter. Trigg fell to his back, where Serra bounced his head off the canvas three times before the referee stopped it. Serra opened the UFC 109 pay-per-view with a win at 2:23 of the first round. “Frank is such a stud wrester, I really have a lot of respect for him,” said Serra. “He does well with jiu-jitsu guys because of his ground-and-pound. I believe in my standup. I’m not the prettiest guy on the pads, but when I land it hurts.” Shortly after the stoppage, Trigg could be seen asking “What happened” and once he got to his feet, he was yelling, “That’s [expletive].” But he came to his senses quickly and admitted the stoppage was proper.
